As a homeowner, you know that you have to take care of maintenance with your windows, doors, roofing, siding, landscaping, and so on. But, how much thought do you give to maintaining your home's air conditioner? This is something that is often overlooked, but when done properly and routinely, it can hep to prevent many different types of problems that can crop up with your cooling system. Take a look below at some of the AC maintenance tips provided by the U.S. Department of Energy.
1. Coil fins. Your evaporator and condenser have aluminum fins that can easily be bent by wind or debris. When this happens, the cool air flow into your home can be effected and this can cause your whole house to feel very hot and uncomfortable. To take care of this problem, you can use a special tool called a "fin comb" to help with getting the fins back into their original shape. This tool is sold at most local hardware stores.
2. Air filters. Your air filters need to be changed once every three months, but ideally, they should really be changed once a month during the hotter months of the year. These filters help to block dust and dirt from getting into your home with the air flow from your cooling system. When they are chock full of debris, air flow into your home is going to be minimal, and this can cause your AC to become very inefficient.
3. Outdoor unit. Branches, leaves, twigs, and anything else lying on or growing near your outdoor unit with a central air conditioner need to be removed or trimmed back. All of these things can prevent proper air flow to the unit and into your home.
If the above maintenance tips are things that you are not comfortable with doing on your own, rest assured knowing that our professionals can provide you with the AC tune-up services that you need each year.
